What do you do with all that mahogany from #23?
Slice it up, of course! It’s not going to make a soundboard if left 4 or 5 inches thick! How do you do that? Very carefully! Seriously! These timbers weigh as much as two hundred pounds or more. One wrong move and no more toes. Not only that but every piece of wood is VERY different, even within itself, with its strengths and weaknesses. The grain doesn’t run perfectly the same all the way through the board. Someone has to take time, use their head and figure out the puzzle of what part should be cut this angle or that in hopes of getting the best use of every very expensive board foot. In the end, if you’re good, you’ll end up with wonderful vertical grain soundboards and backs ready to glue together to start the process of making someone’s new family heirloom.
